Step 3
Get Multi-Engine Experience and Advanced Training
At Pureflight, we work with pilots at all stages of their careers to meet their personal and professional goals.
Step 1) Obtain Your Private and Commercial Certificates with Instrument Rating
a) Choose the flight training school that’s right for you.
It’s essential that you receive the right training for your purposes. Flight schools are not all created equal and the quality of instruments, training facilities, and caliber of instruction can differ substantially from one school to the next. At Pureflight, we have our own dedicated training facilities, a culture of success and empowerment, and the highest standards of instruction and instruments.
b) Finance your training.
We’re always upfront about costs and provide flexible pay-as-you-go options. Outside funding is also available for students who qualify through the following:
- VA FUNDING: Pureflight is approved to accept VA Education Benefits. This allows veterans to use their VA benefits to pay for flight school. Find out more
- STUDENT LOANS: Through our partnership with Klamath Community College, we offer an Associates Degree in Aviation Science. This provides students access to federal student loans, Sallie Mae, and bank student loan programs.

c) Choose the right training program for you.
-
PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE (PPL)
Getting your PPL allows you to fly airplanes for fun and recreation — giving rides to friends, family, and coworkers as well as flying for your own transport. The training you receive to get your PPL also provides you with the fundamental skills and knowledge you need for any future pilot training you decide to undertake. Whether you decide you want to continue to develop your skills as a private pilot or pursue a career as a commercial pilot, this course is your stepping stone. -
COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENSE (CPL)
If you want to get paid to fly, you need to earn your CPL. Licensed commercial pilots can pilot aircraft and transport people or property for compensation or hire. The CPL course expands on the skills and knowledge gained in private pilot training and introduces more advanced maneuvers and techniques. It adheres to more precise standards in order to prepare you for your first job as a commercial pilot. -
INSTRUMENT RATING
Obtaining your instrument rating in addition to your PPL or CPL gives you an edge over other pilots, especially in the eyes of potential employers. This course strengthens your knowledge and skills, qualifies you to fly in diverse weather conditions, and transforms you into a more prepared, proficient, and well-rounded pilot.

Step 2) Build Your Flight Hours
Work as a flight instructor to acquire additional hours.
If you’re looking to get paid to fly, increasing the number of flight hours under your belt is essential. One of the best and most common ways to acquire 1000+ hours in the air is to work as a flight instructor. This is a great way to pass on the skills and knowledge you gained during your training to new pilots as you also improve your own understanding and build hours.
CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR (CFI) RATING
With a CFI rating, you will be certified to instruct other pilots.
CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR – INSTRUMENT (CFII) RATING
A CFII rating allows you to teach new instrument pilots the critical skills required to fly using only the instrument panel. Acquire hours to become an airline transport pilot. Those certified as airline transport pilots are authorized to pilot an aircraft in air carrier service with a maximum gross weight over 12,500 pounds (5,700 kg) and/or over nine passenger seats.
AIRLINE TRANSPORT PILOT CERTIFICATE (ATP)
An ATP is the highest level of aircraft pilot certification in existence. To earn your ATP, you must have at least 1,200 hours of flight time. Pureflight is here to help you build those hours as you continue to hone your skills as a pilot and further broaden your knowledge.
Step 3) Get Multi-Engine Experience and Advanced Training
For those looking to fly for an airline or charter company, multi-engine flight hours are essential.
MULTI ENGINE FLIGHT TRAINING
If you want to fly higher, farther, and faster, you’ll need to earn a multi-engine rating. The multi-engine rating is a necessary step for any professional pilot looking to expand their flight capabilities and job opportunities.
Airline and multi-engine operator hiring requirements vary from company to company. Most regional airlines require 25-100 multi-engine hours to apply. If you have an airline you’re looking to fly with, we’ll work with you to ensure you have enough multi-engine flight hours for application.

MOUNTAIN FLYING
Utilizing the gorgeous Oregon Coast Range, our mountain flying course focuses on the challenges you’ll face as a pilot when encountering steep mountain topography. Knowledge of mountain flying and actual experience flying in mountainous terrain are crucial when flying in the Western United States. At a minimum, any pilot who wants to fly in rugged terrain should take a basic mountain flying course.
Once you’ve developed a foundation of skills and knowledge, you can add some mountain adventure training to take it to a whole new level and further develop your mountain flying skills. We customize training based on students’ experience, aircraft, and comfort level to provide you with targeted training to meet your individual needs.
An extensive ground component includes aircraft performance, reading and understanding performance charts, flight planning for high-altitude and mountain conditions, understanding weather and navigation requirements in mountainous terrain, and basic survival skills. Training also includes approach considerations, ridge crossings, and flying aircraft at or near maximum gross weight.
